we found you sleeping by your lover's stone
beside a ream of paper and a telephone
like a broken bow across a long-lost violin

As the sun set over Spinner's End, finally drawing some of its dreary ugliness out of sharp relief, Severus put down the book he had been reading and stared for a moment out the grimy window. His features were twisted into a sour expression as they so often did when he was thinking of something unpleasant, but he didn't pick up his book or turn from his thoughts until the swollen red sun had diminished to a sliver that hovered on the horizon; then, finally, the sliver itself vanished, leaving the view from his sitting room window obscured in twilit darkness.
Ah, Lily, he thought savagely from his breast, If only you could see me now.
With a precise jerk of his wand arm, the sconces and oil lamps in the room burst into flame, starkly illuminating the dismal furniture, peeling wallpaper and rows upon rows of rigidly aligned bookspines in a flickering orange glow. He turned his attention back to the book on his lap, but only managed to finish one more paragraph before a hot, blinding pain flared through his left arm.
Twisting back the sleeve of his robe, he stared for a long moment at the mark that throbbed and writhed on his inflamed pallid skin, then, releasing his clutch on the fabric, he stood and summoned his mask from its resting place on the mantle.
Taking only another second to compose himself and partition away those thoughts he didn't want anyone else sharing, he touched the brand with one long finger and turned on the spot, disappearing with a crack to answer the summons of the Dark Lord.
